The second focus of Bremen's GMES initiative besides the maritime applications are contributions to the GMES Atmospheric Services (GAS). Since Bremen is involved in many GAS related GMES projects like PROMOTE (LINK: www.gse-promote.org) or GEMS (LINK: www.ecmwf.int/research/EU_projects/GEMS/), Bremen has the long experience and infrastructure to deliver atmospheric services on a European level. GAS have been proposed by the GMES Bureau Brussels in a GAC paper from 23 May 2006 [63 KB]
. According to this early position paper GAS services will treat
-
Daily resolved analysis of the atmosphere to improve the air quality
-
To detect the correlation to the sources of the air pollution and to establish an alert warning system
-
To prepare products which are tailored to the user, which are mainly the EU and national authorities)
-
To estimate trends
-
To sensible the public in terms of air quality and global climate change
-
Concrete core data services will consist of
-
Monitoring air quality parameters, e.g., NO2, SO2, CO, PM,
-
Monitoring global greenhouse gas,
-
Stratospheric ozone,
-
Forecasting and transport observation observation and modeling data
-
Weather parameter, e.g., renewable energy relevant parameter

On a first GAS Meeting in Brussels on 6./7. December 2006, national experts from most of the 25 EU members concretized the focus of the GAS towards the users need and the European capabilities. A position paper is expected end of spring 2007. The participants of the meeting also proposed the national position papers which will flow into the concerted definition of the GAS as an submission for the EC and the corresponding DG. On invitation of Bremen a first meeting with atmospheric experts of the DLR took place on 14 th. December 2006 which will prepare the national position towards GAS.
